Hi, I’m Mark,
a master chef who loves spending weekends in the mountains. Just an hour or so from Palermo is Piano Battaglia, a popular ski resort in western Sicily.
Torrents, forests, icy peaks, hidden valleys, this and much more is on offer in these sometimes softly shaped mountains covered in a wonderful white mantle at this time of year.

Piano Battaglia, nestled between the mountain complex of Pizzo Carbonara and Mount Mufara, is a summer but above all a winter resort with three ski lifts and downhill runs.
Despite the fact that some of the slopes have been closed due to the health emergency, Piano Battaglia remains a lovely place to spend a weekend of fun and relaxation.
Walter and I often rent a car with Sicily Rent Car equipped with snow chains and arrive there in less than two hours.
Once you reach the main car park, there are two historic refuges: Rifugio Marini and Rifugio dello Scoiattolo, where you can stay overnight and rent ski equipment.

Scoiattolo Slope
As soon as you get off the lift, a gentle descent leads to the start of the Scoiattolo slope; perfect for beginners like us, it is fun without going overboard.
For others who like to take in the breathtaking views, once past the hairpin bends of the piste, turn right at the end of a path through some large beech trees to admire the panorama of the Madonie Mountains with Mount Etna in the background.
A typical day?
My friends and I usually go to ski school in the mornings, take a long walk in the woods in the afternoons, and in the evenings we end the day with a dinner at the Rifugio with traditional dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar sauce or venison, relaxing in front of a fireplace that warms the body but above all the heart.

Piano Battaglia is an ideal destination for mountain lovers, what do you love?
