I’ve decided to go on an on-the-road trip with my friends. Destination: Eastern Sicily! We have organised a beautiful itinerary among baroque art jewels and crystal clear sea, which you can find in other articles on this blog.

Today I want to talk about the place that touched my heart the most, Marzamemi.

Marzamemi is a small seaside town, 2 km from Pachino, in the province of Syracuse. It is a charming place with fishing in its soul. Its Tonnara is one of the most important in Sicily and dates back to the time of Arab domination.

Although in recent years the town has focused a great deal on tourism, thanks to its beautiful beach and the port equipped for mooring boats, its fortunes still lie mainly in fish products such as bottarga (fish roe) and ventresca di tonno rosso (red tuna belly), and wine: a due mention must go to Nero d’Avola, one of the most famous Italian wines.

But what to do in Marzamemi? Relax!

As well as swimming in its clear waters and eating fish with your feet on the sand, there are many activities that can be organised in and around the town:

If in the town you can’t fail to visit the beautiful Tonnara di Marzamemi, perhaps having the good fortune to participate in one of the many events that are organised here, just outside you can organise boat trips or tours to the towns that are not far away.

Between Marzamemi and Noto lies the Vendicari Fauna Oasis Nature Reserve, very important for the presence of the marshes that serve as a resting place during the migration of the Pink Flamingos, but also rich in remains from Greek times. Among the jewels of the Reserve are the Torre Sveva and the Tonnara di Vendicari.

Beach and sea lovers will not be bored in Marzamemi: just after the entrance to the town, there is a small, uncrowded beach with crystal-clear water. A little further on, a stop at the Spiaggia dell’Isola delle Correnti (Island of the Currents Beach), where the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas meet, the southernmost point of Sicily, is a must.
