The Madonie Park: a weekend of traditions and nature

The Madonie Park

Hi I’m Antonio,

former scout, experienced hiker, madly in love with nature.

Today I want to take you to the discovery of a little known part of Sicily, perfect for mountain and nature lovers like me: the Madonie Park.

The Madonie Park

The Madonie Park embraces over 40,000 hectares of naturalistic landscape in the central-northern part of Sicily.

Here you will find the highest mountains in Sicily which allow you to admire a vast panorama overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The whole area reserves breathtaking landscapes, its woods are rich in different specimens of Mediterranean fauna, such as hare, hedgehog, wild boar and fallow deer. Wonderful to admire in flight only the hawks and eagles that dwell in this green lung.

Thanks to the 15 municipalities that fall within the area, access to the Park is not at all difficult; the most popular entrances are from the north Castelbuono and from the south Petralia Soprana.

There are at least eight equipped areas throughout the territory, precious refreshment points for hikers who cross the area on foot.

There are over 24 different paths, of varying difficulty, to be covered on foot or on horseback, and for the lazy ones there are routes to be taken directly by car, starting from Castelbuono to Petralia Soprana, on the other side of the Park, passing through Geraci Siculo and Gangi.

The most beautiful experiences are linked to adventure; inside the Madonie Park there is a reality loved by young and old alike: the Adventure Park! Here you can spend entire days of carefree climbing, climbing, tree houses and group excursions.

For history lovers, instead, sixteen museums will be enough to let you know the traditions and the ancient beauties of the Madonie.

Among the most important open-air museums you will find the Geopark of the Madonie – UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It represents almost all aspects of Sicilian geology, has a very complex history that began over 220 million years ago, and is composed mainly of dolomitic limestone that evokes unknown and disappeared worlds. Interesting karst morphologies, both on the surface and underground, have developed more recently, 23.5 million years ago.

For those who move mainly by car cannot renounce to the discovery of the Madonnite villages: small villages with a strong tradition and not very crowded, perfect for an autumn walk.

The genuine perfumes and flavours will make you discover simple dishes, entirely made up of the local harvest.
